And occasionally when I get up to Los Angeles, sometimes Ill go out on the weekend, and some of these clubs, manthis new generation in the clubs, man, theyre playing this song, and when it comes on theyre screaming it out to each other. And then finally, months went by, and the band got impatient. But Im sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them. And I said, Come on, we gotta take a picture. And I laid down, and I said, Aww, girls, this is too sexy. So we took a picture laying down on the sidewalk, by the star. But that can make you perspire too much and you can get cramps from the lack of salt. When I did drink, it was in excess. Theyre all magical to me. AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet. And that is sort of a drag. I think its up to almost 50 million, now. You had millions of fans and sold a ton of records. They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? So I decided to try and teach myself. I have tried to talk to him, numerous times. After the tour, they got back in touch and asked me about being in the band, because Eric had unfortunately passed on. I know that sounds intense, but I had to take care of myself. AD: I was into everything. We have children together, which are the songs we wrote together, and we have a vested interest, as songwriters, in where they go and where they dont go. So Im really excited about getting out there and just being completely in control of whats going on, for real. I started Blue Whale, which was an 8-piece band. It's kind of a long solo about 27 or 28 seconds. Like, Gee whiz, you have a Lamborghini, so you mustve been big. I didnt understand that. I dont know. The Retaliation are rated by many blues aficionados as one the three greatest British Blues bands, along with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall s Bluesbreakers. I was the new kid. Yknow? Nobody knew, yknow? Called Patiently. It began at that point for me, with the band. And Im grateful for all of it, I wouldnt trade it for the worldbut it didnt squelch much, yknow? It was a pretty heavy situation. Im in the boil-down process. But we were also working together. So I decided it was time to get rid of that band arid start another one. And it was really, really great to see everybody. For in- stance, The Grand Wazoo was almost a jazz big-band record. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. And so I was always livin on that edge. I want to play so there's something to look at. They finally gave up and got me one, but by that time it was too late. Because it was such an amazing use. Id write some melodies, Id write some hooks. Thats a tough question. What I thought I had to be? He offered me the gig with him at 20 pounds a week, which at that point, was like 60 bucks. The matched grip keeps you simple enough to hit the drum that way. And some funk. We met in San Rafael, we sat on the edge of the marina, and I just told them, I cant do this anymore. What happened was wed put out our first record, Journey, and I think we sold a little over 100,000 records. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." So I left them and was out of work for two weeks, which was the longest 1 had ever been out of work. When Im ready Im ready. And I said, I understand that. Everybody understood that. I was going to the fair in my home town. Less means more to the average person. It felt so awesome, to see that song be used in that moment. And we need to know what you wanna do. I said, Youve tried out some singers? And he said yes. I think the last show, was at the end of January, 87. Have you considered doing any teaching? AD: No. And so everybody packed their stuff, went home, and Im hearing that were gonna be off for maybe a couple months, three months, six months, whateverbut it turned out to be close to eight to ten years. Jimi would come down and sit in with Retaliation and we would have a ball. Because then I started to become a medical guy. But it's hard to teach kids that. And I said to Herbie, the manager, I think this is a bad ideathat it would fracture the band on some level. Possibly. I look over at the bar, and they're all sitting by the bar drinking! So to me, the stone was already cracked. I was confounded by that. RM: How did you decide on your particular style? Aynsley Dunbar Educational Qualifications. And those lyrics are a big part of it. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. We all put our lives and sweat and blood and tears into this thing. During the time I was with Bowie, I also did Nils Lofgren's first solo album. AD: Completely ad-Iib. I thought in my own mind that before you could even go out there and play, you had to be as good as the people you were listening to on records. And when it parks back out in the audience, at the end of the song, I walk offstage. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. Call it the J-Boys. It was kind of weird, because as soon as we started cranking up, the orchestra sort of disappeared. On the ZappaCast, you mentioned Aynsley Dunbar and Terry Bozzio being in the audience at one show - did you meet them after? In another interview, he stated " I eventually got the sack for . I gotta get out for a while. And they said, Well, what do you mean? And I said, Thats exactly what I mean, is what Im saying. Dunbar began his career on the British blues-rock scene, playing with Champion Jack Dupree and Eddie Boyd before becoming the drummer for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967; he was influenced by jazz and the Who's Keith Moon as well. 1967 - 1970 (3 years) The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation was a late-60s British blues-rock band led by drummer Aynsley Dunbar after his stints in John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and the Jeff Beck Group. They were gonna go do their thing. Much like a lot of people are. And I think that actually might have provoked Perry to go and do a solo record. I can understand how they feel. I use it to find out how I'm playing-where I rush or where I slow down. I had complete confidence in the whole process. I delivered what I wanted to do, I hit the notes, I feel good about itbut you dont know how much you used up until tomorrow morning. I was a Journey member. It was unbelievable. I just tune them and that's about it. . I called Jonathan. Which singers will do a lotbut I only had to do it once. Nothing was more important than being part of this huge family called Journey. And then it felt terrible._ [laughs]_. There was several medical, non-surgical choices, and I tried all of those. This has to do with Kiss having a certain sound and style. The manager sent me apiece of legal paper with about ten different things on it, written out by hand, and said, "Sign it." I'll give it up; " It was more like, "I got this far. RM: Have you experimented with any electronic percussion? So John said, "Well, we've got a gig tomorrow night. And she gave him the message, he called me from there, and I said Maybe we should talk about getting back together, Id like to see what you think, lets have coffee when you get back. So we had coffee, talked about it, and he said, Well, we should get together with Neal and talk about it, and me and Neal and Jon had coffee, and that was kind of the beginning. April 2, 2021 3:52PM EDT. So you were always opposed to that stuff? I didnt have years of being in Santana under my belt, like Neal and Gregg. To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. AD: A funny thing happened with that. I spent 18 months with them, but they were going through a slow decline. He is not dating anyone. Fuck Steveyknow. The more you play, the less they hear. The guy could sing amazingly well. You didnt make another record for ten years after that. I remember [pause]. Its what I do. Weve always had a difference of opinion in that area. But nothing really got any hotter. The solo is arranged so it's really in-your-face guitar. It sort of gives a rush in the feel, without actually rushing. But along with this, you have to print that I cant blame them. Tony Soprano thinks Journeys cool. And us being on this mission together, to be the greatest, and write the greatest songs, and come up with great sounds, and fight for the greatest performances. That's why I enjoy playing "White Rabbit" with the Starship. AD: I am. So everything was really out of date. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. Drummer for The Mothers of Invention, Aynsley Dunbar was living in a guest cabin on Frank Zappa's property when he first met Ayres and de Strulle. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. Now I feel like I have 100 percent of myself here, and Im more into it than Ive ever been into it. Yeah. Your playing tends to diminish from lack of work, so I formed my own band and worked it like Mayall did his. Yeah, the Oh Sherrie record. I was writing for the people who might want to listen to it. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. And the theory coming from Steve, and I kind of understood it, was that everybodyll go out and be able to express themselves musically in some other areas, and then when we reconvene, perhaps we will have discovered or found things that we can bring to the group to help the group evolve. Even if you get a loose tension rod, it will still keep the tone of the drum because it's so well cast that the rods on either side of the loose one will keep the head seated perfectly. Theres definitely some decisions, that are pretty personal, that I wouldnt have done the way I did, because I was not thinking clearly. AD: I've always liked Max Roach. Fine. 'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." Then when it came to the rest of the kit, I could get used to the sounds and the feel of the drums one at a time, and not be over powered by the immensity of the whole situation. A lot of people go in there and try to blast their way through everything, and then they don't want to come back because they've pushed themselves too hard. Gene and Paul have to have a drummer that they feel interprets their style. I was shocked when I heard that.. We have a million other people out there who want to hear something. Which was, I gotta get signed before its too late. [laughs]. Was it weird, coming back to Journey after that? But they didnt have any quote hit records, and werent on the radio much. Before that, it's hard for me to remember which would be the most interesting. I dont know. There was a statement I made on a VH1 special, which Im sure youve heardthat I never really felt part of the band. So I went to this club and we chatted about me coming over and joining his band, but 1 couldn't give an answer because l wasn't sure if I wanted to disband my group. For about six months, I worked with just a snare drum. I think they thought I was just going to leave the group and go solo and tell everybody to gowhatever. You can only repeat the same structure over and over so many times before it gets monotonous. So at the end of a night, you feel great. Dont crack the stone. Journey Settles Lawsuit with former Band Members. Remember, it took two solo albums from Neal before I did my first. I work hard the first day, then take one day off; then sort of a lighter workout on the middle day, with a day off; and then tough on the third day, with two days off afterward. That part she had was incredibly difficult, but she did an amazing job. Because before that last tourmy mother had died, during the making of Raised on Radio. Now, I'm not playing with the idea filling in a lot, but If I were to go back and play with Zappa, I'd play as much now as I did then because Frank's music creates more freedom. Everyone thought I would move back to L.A. , but the Starship required a drummer at that time so I joined them. And I think that we accomplished a lot together. You dont understand. The reunion, thenthat was two years after? Right on! So that was like a nod to Journey from my solo side. My sister started playing guitar at that time, and I didn't want to be in competition with her, so I decided there must be something else I would like. The iconic singer appeared onstage with his former bandmates as they each gave speeches, but did not perform with the group later in the event. It sounded good. I've decided in my ownhead what sells records and what doesn't. I believe we were in Hawaii. Shortly after that, I disbanded Retaliation and formed Blue Whale, but I could never get the same brass section to stay in the band. You work on something for so many years, and you attain what you attain, which was an amazing feat, and then its sort of like the rug is pulled out from under you. RM: You've had your own groups in the past. When a drummer gets calluses on his hands, they no longer chafe and they no longer blister, and thats fantastic. Then I got a call from Bob Ezrin, the producer, and he asked me if I would do an album with Lou Reed.
