Finally, there's a lovely pub in the village making this a great walk for all the family on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The extension first takes you on an adventure through lovely open Hertfordshire countryside with great views before strolling you along a pretty stretch of the Grand Union Canal. It is a pay and display and costs 1.70 for up to 3 hours. It heads out west from Lilley, climbing Wardswood Lane and then the John Bunyan Trail before joining the Chiltern way to loop back to the start via Whitehill Farm and Lilleypark Wood. There isn't a pub actually on the route, but there is one on the Colney Heath high street. From there its an easy wander into Ware theres a lido and play area at Ware Priory as well as a little museum next to the library. This section of the walk crosses our Middleton to Youlgreave walk (step 9), which turns left, upstream along the River Bradford. Access the trails through the visitor centre by a hard path. There's a short stretch of walking alongside a busy road to get to the start of the loop, but it's on a solid footpath and it's worth the effort as you soon emerge out into the estate for a beautiful loop of walking through the wonderful and peaceful landscape. You can walk along sections of it in Cassiobury Park in Watford, the towpath in Berkhamstead and Tring Park. You have to cross the busy and fast A10 road at one point, so please take great care here, and there are a number of pubs on the route to enjoy as you get back into Buntingford. Salcombe Hill, Devon. The first of our routes is a very short stroll into the Beeches and around the golf course area of the woodlands. You'll need a lot of energy and time to tackle this one, but you'll be rewarded with lopts of wonderful views and landscapes and as a massive bonus the route passes three welcoming pubs on the way around. There are not a lot of surprises on this one as you will be mainly strolling around open arable farmland footpaths, but you will enjoy a dose of fresh air, peace, quiet and a lovely village pub towards the end of the route. This route heads in the opposite direction to the first and takes you into the countryside to the south of the town towards Aspenden. The extra distance on this route takes you past the Frithsden Beeches and on an extra loop of walking around the woodlands of Berkhamstead Common. Bramfield woods is great for den building, geo-caching and wild flower spotting theres an incredible display of bluebells in April and May. The park has lovely, wide open spaces which are great if you want to bring along some sporting equipment. It runs from Welwyn Garden City to Hertford and there are various extensions including the towpath from Hertford to Ware which Ive detailed in the Hertfordshire river walks section here. Paths are level and low gradient ramps are provided for bridges. If you choose to cycle this route with children, Id recommend doing it from Welwyn to Hertford as its slightly downhill and you can really whizz along it the journey in reverse might be more of a struggle for little cyclists. Follow the lane, with views over farmland on either side, passing a farmhouse on your left and then a small wood and a pond on your right. It is quite an open walk without a lot of shade, so please be aware of this on days when you will be exposed to the weather. After this the heads off into the outskirts of the woodhall park along the pretty river before turning route and heading back. Once youve had your fill of the woodland, follow the paved part of Perrywood Lane in the opposite direction as it winds its way downhill and then back uphill over the railway line towards Watton at Stone. After that, you'll then descend back down to the village for your reward at the wonderful country pub in the village. There is a small section of climbing on this route, but it's not too bad. If you want to see the sculpture trail, then you need to park in the Broxbourne Wood East Car Park, Pembridge Ln, Broxbourne EN10 7QP. There is a caf (Inn on the Park) and toilets at the far end of the lake from the car park. There are no facilities at Panshanger Park. There is so much wildlife to see, including our favourites kingfishers and dragonflies. Monken Hadley2 milesThis first route is a nice short stroll around the woodlands of Monken Hadley Common and Hadley Wood close to the border between Hertfordshire and Greater London. Sefton Park. This steep circular walk of about 2 miles has uneven tracks and paths which means it is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. - from the National Trust website. This option heads in the opposite direction from the first two routes, taking you on a long adventure to the north of the village. Contact details in leaflets may be out of date. It offers an excellent ride from the heart of Tonbridge alongside the River Medway, out into the countryside to the glorious buildings of Penshurst Place. The woods are great for a wander if youre not ready to head back to the village yet. Disused railway lines are perfect for family walks in Hertfordshire because they are usually very flat, even surfaces and easy to navigate.
